Following the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights of St. John set about building the city of Valletta, the so-called “city built by gentlemen for gentlemen”. One of the few European cities to be constructed on an entirely new site, in its day Valletta was a fine example of modern city planning thanks to its grid system design, while it was also meticulously planned to accommodate water and sanitation and allow for the circulation of air. In the course of your journey through the enchanting Maltese capital, you will have the chance to see many of the city’s important landmarks, such as the Upper Barrakka Gardens with their breathtaking views of the Grand Harbor, the Auberges of the Knights, as well as the stunning Saint John Co-Cathedral where you will discover several important works of art including Caravaggio’s The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. As part of your tour, you will also have the opportunity to experience a stunning audio-visual show that captures Malta’s long and fascinating history.
