Introduction
Built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century, Castello Di Velona is perched on a hill overlooking the ancient road, Via Clodia, which connected southern Etruria to Rome. Strategically positioned the castle was extended and further fortified over the centuries – the 12th century “Watchtower” still standing tall to remind visitors of the old rivalry between Siena and Florence. Left to the unhospitable devices of nature for many centuries, the derelict and ruined castle was initially restored to life in 1997 and consequently transformed to the modern-day Castello di Velona Resort in 2003. Today the Castello Di Velona offers luxury accommodations, exquisite Tuscan cuisine and a truly authentic experience.
