Discover the History of Ireland: Kinsale to Kenmare Day Tour

Discover the History of Ireland: Kinsale to Kenmare Day Tour

After a brief morning walk around the narrow colorful streets of Kinsale, drive through West Cork and the picturesque towns of Clonakilty with many links to Michael Collins – a leading figure in the Irish struggle for independence in the early 20th century, known as a revolutionary, soldier and politician, he was assassinated by anti-Treaty forces on the 22nd of August 1922. Make a stop at Skibbereen Heritage Centre and The Famine museum and learn about one of the most trying times in Irish history - during 1845 and 1849, more than one million people died from hunger and over a million more emigrated from Ireland, reducing the local population significantly. Drive on through Bantry Bay and over The Caha Pass and into Kenmare or “Neidin” in Gaelic meaning “little nest”. Founded in 1670, Kenmare is situated on The Ring of Kerry and just north of Killarney National Park.

A Guided Adventure from Cork to Kenmare

A Guided Adventure from Cork to Kenmare

During this tour, we will take in some of Ireland’s most dramatic coastal features starting with The Old Head of Kinsale. This area is the nearest point of land to where the RMS Lusitania was sunk in 1915 and has one of the most spectacular views in Ireland. Moving on, Timoleague Abbey, founded in 1240, is one of the few early Franciscan friaries with standing remains in Ireland. As we continue, we will see the multi-award winning, cosmopolitan and seaside town of Clonakilty known as the birth place of Michael Collins and one of the most visited places in Ireland. In our way to Kenmare, we will also visit the Drombeg stone circle consisting of 17 pillar stones believed to be over 2000 years old. In Skibbereen, a vibrant market town, we will have a short lunch stop before we visit the heritage centre to learn about the Famine, one of the blackest pages in Ireland’s history. Passing through Bantry Bay and over Caha Pass you will be led to our final destination, Kenmare or Ceann Mara, meaning "head of the sea", haven of tranquillity and one of the most untouched environments in Europe.
