The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus is perhaps the most impressive and relatively intact ancient Greek theatre, located in the Peloponnese. It was built in the 4th century BCE and, due to its excellent acoustics and condition, the ancient theater is still used today, most notably under the framework of the annual Epidaurus Festival or Hellenic Festival, where well known and iconic artists have performed over the last decades, notably Maria Callas, Ralf Fines and more, reenacting roles of ancient drama or comedy of Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus, or opera works or Shakespeare. Your TrueTrips guide will guide you through the auditorium and the orchestra areas and share how the sanctuary worked in ancient times and how it is still in use today. It was dedicated to God Asklepios, son of Apollo, who was believed to possess healing powers. The sanctuary attracted people from all over Greece and even during Roman times, who came to be treated by the resident priests.
