Originally founded as an ancient Greek colony between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, Split was famously chosen by Emperor Diocletian as the location of his palace where he chose to spend his retirement days at the turn of the 4th century AD. After taking some time to explore Split you will head northeast to the ancient city of Salona. As you explore the city’s narrow streets, you will discover more about Split’s fascinating past as well as the city’s modern identity. Following your exploration of Split, you will visit the medieval fortress of Klis that is located outside the city before ending your tour at the town of Sinj, where a chivalric tournament to commemorate the victory over the Ottoman siege of the city in 1715 has been taking place since the 18th century.
